RESUMO

SUMMARY: In recent years, aesthetic dentistry has become a major focus for the public. Facial attractiveness plays a key role on modern society and the creation of harmonious smile is an aim for every dentist. The objective of this study was to define certain values of the inter-incisive index in Bulgarians, the sexual dimorphism and bilateral asymmetry and to verify differences of this index between Bulgarians and other Balkan populations. The present study included 121 males and 111 females of Bulgarian origin aged 20- 40 years. Mesiodistal dimensions of maxillary central and lateral incisors were measured by Dentistry Sliding Vernier Caliper. We used the technique of direct anthropometry, modified by Prof. Y. Yordanov. We calculated the inter-incisive index as ratio of the mesiodistal dimension of maxillary lateral incisor to the mesiodistal dimension of the maxillary central incisor. The measurements were analyzed with SPSS 23. The level of statistical significance was set at P< 0.05. The inter-incisive index showed no statistically significant differences between left and right side of the dental arch in both sexes. We did not find statistically significant differences between males and females as well. On the other hand, we found statistically significant differences in MD values of incisors between Bulgarians and other Balkan nations. Inter-incisive index shows no sexual dimorphism and bilateral asymmetry in Bulgarians. This can be helpful in aesthetic dentistry, in prosthodontics and in orthodontic treatment planning.

INTRODUCTION: Sex estimation is an important step in developing a biological profile. Teeth are one of the most durable physical elements in the human body and thus can be used very successfully for this purpose. The aim of the present study was to determine sex differences in odontometric dimensions of maxillary and mandibular molars in Bulgarians.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Digital technologies have widened their horizons into the world of dental medicine and now further expanding to cover all branches. This new modern technology replaces traditional laboratory techniques allowing effective patient care. Patients who suffer from bruxism-the act of involuntary habitual grinding of teeth-have widely been benefited by splint treatments. The aim of this article is to display the variety of occlusal splints that can be created by the 3Shape Digital Design Software and their application in specific clinical situations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six variations in the splints were created digitally-three with uncombined designs and the remaining three with a combination of two of the main options available. During this study, 36 splints were made for patients aged 24 to 55 inclusively. RESULTS: The largest number of splints according to the clinical picture were made of "raise to antagonist cusp tips" (14 pieces) and the remaining were of combined type "raise to antagonist cusp tips + raise to antagonist plane" (12 pieces). There thickness was within the range of 1.5 and 5 mm. CONCLUSION: 3Shape Digital Design Software-Splint Studio is a suitable system for designing and creating occlusal splints with respect to certain clinical situations. It is possible to combine the three main types in a separate section of the dental arch according to the case.

RESUMO

Bruxism is a disease with a multifactorial etiology. Its clinical manifestations are most often an unaesthetic smile with abraded tooth surfaces, temporomandibular disorders and muscle hyperactivity. Here we present a case of bruxism where proper articulation of the occlusal splint was performed using the T-scan Novus system. A patient with bruxism underwent treatment with stabilization splint made by 3D printer technology. Intraoral scanning was performed using Trios Color (3Shape, 2014), and the digital design was achieved using the 3Shape Dental system design - splint studio. Formlabs Form 2 printer with biocompatible resin Dental LT Clear Resin was used for printing. The T-Scan Novus system with software attached to it, version 9.1, was used for digital examination of the occlusion. A 2.7 mm thick occlusal splint was developed, and the software adapted the occlusion with antagonists. After adjustment with T-Scan Novus, a reduction in disocclusion time of the patient was achieved, which is a desired result in the treatment of bruxism. The position of the joint components was proven radiologically. The treatment of bruxism with splint therapy continues to be the main method of treatment. Using digital technology allows for more accurate constructions and precise balancing of occlusal relationships.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The incisors and molars play a major role in the formation and function of permanent dentition. Much research has been devoted to investigating the eruption of teeth and their root development. AIM: To study the root development of permanent incisors and mandibular molars in correlation with treatment plan and proper treatment protocols. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Demirjian's method was used to assess the root development of incisors and mandibular molars in children between 7 and 12 years old. RESULTS: In 7-year-old children most of the lower first mandibular molars (76%) had complete root length, but open apices. Eighty-two percent of the roots of the first mandibular molars of the 8-year-old children and 54% of these molars of the 9-year-old children were with open apices. The first mandibular molars had incomplete roots in the 10-year-olds (6%) and even in the 11-year-old children (4%). We detected Stage E in 32% of the 10-year-olds and in 24% of the 11-year-old children. Even in 12-year-old children we found Stage E in 4% of them from their panoramic X-rays. We detected complete root development in all of the children at the age of 12. CONCLUSIONS: Dental practitioners have to wait until the age of 10, 11 and even 12 to extract the first molars, when the furcation is formed. Proper clinical examination and diagnostic radiographs should be done before the beginning of the treatment of molars and incisors at the age between 7 and 12.
